So yesterday a "friend" of mine said that I was in Uncle Toms Cabin, and if you don't know that is a pretty big insult to black folk. Now he says that I'm not an Uncle Tom, which is a worse insult, but apparently I am in the Cabin. Now what I would like to point out is that this same person had no problem asking me for a little money when he needed it. Money that I apparently get working my job in the Cabin and guess what folks, he doesn't have a job!!
See we were having a discussion on race and while I agree with him that racism is alive and well in these United States I also had the nerve to point out that some of the problems in the African American community have more to do with what we as African Americans are doing and less to do with white people. And according to him this means that I am judging people, I have no knowledge of my history and I am in the Cabin. Oh and lets not forget I am disrespecting all those who died so that I could have these rights that I have. Never mind that I think to truly honor them we need to take a good hard look at ourselves and maybe see how we have dropped the ball. Somewhere along the line the African American community as a whole has just given up on the whole civil rights movement. We did get our rights but we have become complacent and that along with racism has a very detrimental impact on our community. But hey clearly this opinion means that I have sold out...
I guess I should be lucky that he lowered himself to be "friends" with someone like me, but all in all he is pretty smart guy. I mean you never know when you will need to make a withdrawal from the Cabin.
